Maintaining Your Faux Plants

Maintaining Your Faux Plants

Welcome back to The Spotted Donkey blog posts! We're glad you're here! Today we will be giving you some tips on how to maintain your new faux plants.

How to Keep Your Plants Clean

  • One of the biggest challenges is dust gathering on your plants.

  • How do you keep them clean?

  • They are somewhat delicate and it’s almost impossible to use a cloth of any kind except for thicker leaved greenery

  • The best way to clean is by using an air spray like the one you use to blow off your keyboard

The best way to clean artificial plants depends on their material and how dirty they are. For standard plastic plants, a quick rinse in the shower or sink works best, while delicate silk arrangements require dry methods like compressed air or a salt shake.

Always try to clean your plants outdoors or over a protected surface to keep flying dust and water from messing up your home floors.

Method 1: The Quick Dusting (For All Plants)

If your plants only have a light layer of daily dust, use these quick dry methods.

  • Hairdryer / Compressed Air: Set a hairdryer to the cool setting. Blow the dust off from the top of the plant downward.

  • Soft Paintbrush: Use a clean, dry paintbrush to swipe dust out of tight crevices, creases, and small leaves.

Method 2: The Damp Microfiber Cloth (For Large, Leafy Plants)

Best for large faux plants.

  • Support the Leaves: Place one hand underneath the leaf to support it so it doesn't snap off.

  • Wipe Downward: Wipe from the stem base to the leaf tip using a damp microfiber cloth.

  • Add Soap if Greasy: If the plant is in a kitchen and has sticky grease dust, mix warm water and a few drops of dish soap onto the cloth.

Method 3: The Shower or Hose Rinse (For Safe Plastic Plants)

Best for hardy, all-plastic plants with thick layers of caked-on grime.

  • Protect the Base: Wrap a plastic trash bag around the pot and tie it securely around the main stem. This prevents the internal foam, glue, or fake soil from getting soaked and growing mold.

  • Gently Spray: Take the plant to the shower or backyard hose. Spray the leaves with lukewarm or cool water on a low-pressure setting.

  • Drip Dry: Shake the plant gently to remove excess water drops, and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area.

Method 4: The Salt Shake Hack (For Delicate Silk or Fabric Flowers)

Silk flowers can get ruined or bleed color if they get too wet. Use salt as a gentle, dry abrasive.

  • Bag the Plant: Place the silk stems or flowers upside down into a large plastic grocery bag or Ziploc.

  • Add Salt: Pour 1/2 cup of coarse salt or table salt into the bag.

  • Shake Gently: Shake the bag for 1 to 2 minutes. The salt grains will naturally knock loose and grab the dust without breaking the delicate fabric petals. Shake the plant out over a trash can when done.

If you'll use these methods your plants will maintain that real-touch look and feel for years.
